Welcome

OK. This is it? I wanted to create a blog for two reasons. One, all the cool people seem to be doing it (creating a blog). Second, I want to create a forum for people in my field (educational administration) and for those who are interested in going into this field.

Many issues exist today in education. It will take strong leadership to bring schools through this trying time. I hope through this forum, educational leaders will help each other work through these issues.

I am a high school principal at an urban high school. 35% poverty level and all the issues that come with that. In the future I will look to address some of those issues and hopefully get some feedback from you!

  1. "Leadership is influence--nothing more, nothing less."--John Maxwell.

A debate often ensues over the difference between management and leadership. Is there a difference? In a school setting it is sometimes hard to distinquish between the two. Management is definitely necessary in a school setting. Many underperforming schools can be set on the right track by being well "managed." However, to truly move a school in an "excellent" direction you must have leadership. Maxwell contends that the main difference between the two is that "leadership is about influencing people to follow while management focuses on maintaining systems and processes." As I mentioned earlier some school have no "systems or processes." An effective manager can enter this chaotic scenario and make some positive impact. However, true leadership would take the school to a level even beyond improvement. Maxwell contends that the best way to test a person to see whether they can "lead" or "manage" is to ask the person to create positive change. Managers can maintain direction, but they can't change it. To move people in a new direction, you need influence. This begs the question, how do you develop the ability to "influence?"
